Mount Pleasant, TX, Nov. 24, 2014 – A Mount Pleasant military support group is preparing for its biggest mission of the year as its Holidays for Heroes Christmas Campaign shifts into high gear.
M.O.M. (Ministering our Military) is collecting items to fill Christmas care packages for military members stationed overseas and at military installations in the U.S. The group is asking the community to drop off items in red collection tubs that are placed at several locations through Dec. 5. Members will also accept items at the Holidays for Heroes Packing Station set up at Christmas on the Square in downtown Mount Pleasant on Sat. Dec. 6.
The packing station will be set up from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the M.O.M. booth. The community is invited to join them to form an assembly line to pack the boxes and sign Christmas cards for the troops.
The group is accepting monetary donations as well. The money will be used to purchase care package items and postage. Each package costs $16 to mail. The group’s goal is to pack at least 100 boxes.
“Last year we mailed 86 care packages and would love to double that number this year,” said M.O.M Co-founder Kellye Cooper.
M.O.M. is also encouraging people to contact the group to add their military member’s address to those who will be receiving the care packages.
They also would like veterans and others in the community to become involved with the group.
“We want everyone who loves and supports our military to become involved with our group, not just the families of military members,” Cooper said. “If you want to recognize what our military does for our freedom and our rights, then join us.”
Recently the group attended Veteran’s Day events at Chapel Hill ISD and P.E. Wallace Middle School.
“Veterans are sometimes our “forgotten” heroes. As a society we try to place a lot of recognition on our active duty members, but if it weren’t for our veterans, we would not be where we are today,” Cooper said. “It is our job as a group and a society to recognize them and give them the honor that they are due.”
The group was recognized at the Chapel Hill event with a $300 donation.
M.O.M., which has received its 501 (c) (3) nonprofit status, held a successful fundraiser during the Titus County Fair in September, raising more than $1,200 through the luminary sales to M.O.M. t-shirts and donations.
Following the fair fundraiser, the group held a special luminary lighting ceremony at the Titus County Courthouse on Gold Star Luminary Day, a day set aside to honor Gold Star families. M.O.M. also honored veterans with red star luminaries and active duty military members with blue star luminaries.
“We wanted to remember the ones who gave the ultimate sacrifice and the families left here to mourn them,” Cooper said. “We wanted to honor these families and recognize the sacrifice they’ve made.”
