Mount Pleasant, TX, May 19, 2015 – The Carry The Load National Relay will receive a huge patriotic welcome Friday, May 22 as it stops in Mount Pleasant along its annual West Point, N.Y. to Dallas walk to bring awareness to the true meaning of Memorial Day.
M.O.M. Ministering Our Military, a Mount Pleasant-based non-profit organization, is again hosting a rally and barbeque lunch fundraiser in support of CTL, which raises funds through its Memorial May events to “honor military, law enforcement, firefighters and rescue personnel who dedicate their lives to keeping our country safe,” according to its Website.
“It is so important that on Memorial Day we honor all of them and remember those who gave their lives in service to our country and our communities,” said M.O.M. Co-founder Kellye Cooper.
This is the third year that M.O.M. has hosted a rally stop for CTL. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Mount Pleasant-Titus County Chamber & Visitors Center. It will include live music, speakers and a barbeque sandwich lunch. Local relay teams will then join the national CTL team on the Mount Pleasant to Winfield leg of the relay.
In 2014, about 250 people joined the M.O.M. relay team to walk with national team and raise funds for CTL. The rally drew about 500 people and Cooper expects the crowd to be significantly larger this year. Invitations were sent to more than 400 local veterans and all area first responder departments. The group is also inviting Gold Star families - family members of fallen military members - as well as families of first responders who have died in the line of duty to be honored guests at the event.
Those family members, veterans and first responders will be served a complimentary lunch plate, while others attending are asked to purchase lunch tickets for $6. A tent will be set up as shelter for those attending the rally, however people are advised to bring blankets and lawn chairs.
Invited veterans and those who register at the event will be included in a Veterans Wall of Honor being built by local Boy Scout troops. The wall will be on display at the rally as well as the Chapel Hill and P.E. Wallace Veterans Day events in November.
The local relay team includes people of all ages falling into cadence with the CTL team, which will leave the Chamber at 1 p.m. and arrive in Winfield around 3:30 p.m. For those who can’t finish the route, support vehicles will pick people up along the way and provide water. Veterans can also register to ride the route on trailers. People can sign up to join the relay team at carrytheload.org/mtpleasant.
Proceeds from the lunch and the M.O.M. relay team sponsorships will benefit the Carry The Load organization. Last year, M.O.M. raised more than $10,000 for CTL.
